1852-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 15-M. The 1852-D is a turning point for the quarter eagles of Dahlonega. The five-figure mintages that predominated from 1839 to 1851 yield to mid-range four-figure production runs instead. In addition, many examples are heavily worn or suffer from significant planchet problems. Yet the piece offered here has outstanding eye appeal. The orange-gold surfaces exhibit powerful luster with a touch of flash in the fields. Though the denticles show softness, a flaw found on most examples, the central devices remain sharp. Rather than the sharp abrasions often found on this issue, light, wispy marks define the grade. An uncommonly fine representative of this elusive issue. Population: 4 in 62, 2 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
