1852-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS.
1852-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 15-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The only die pair used this year. Reverse of 1850-1859.RARITY INFORMATION: Only 4,078 pieces were struck and the 1852-D is one of the half dozen rarest Dahlonega quarter eagles. There are 75-85 pieces known with 15-18 in About Uncirculated and five or six in Uncirculated. The finest is a PCGS MS63 in the Duke's Creek Collection while the second best is a PCGS MS62 (Ex: James Stack) in a Kansas collection. The Green Pond Collection coin is probably the third finest known and it is one of a total of four individual pieces graded as such by PCGS with only one better.STRIKE: Beginning with this issue, the quality of strike for Dahlonega quarter eagles worsens appreciably. However, this coin is quite well impressed. The obverse is completely detailed with no weakness on the hair above the ear. The denticles are full and the stars show complete radial lines. The central reverse is also sharp with full feathers, sharp claws, and full definition on the eagle's right (facing) leg. There is some weakness on the denticles but this is found on every 1852-D quarter eagle.SURFACES: A small, shallow scrape can be seen on the cheekbone of Liberty and there are some light hairlines (not from cleaning) in the obverse fields. With the exception of some minor hairlines, the reverse is very clean with no marks of note. Unlike a number of 1852-D quarter eagles, this piece does not have any black grease stains or copper-hued areas of discoloration. Some removable haze can be seen on the reverse.LUSTER: There appears to be a good deal of original satiny luster on the surfaces, although it is difficult to gauge exactly how much because of the deep color seen on both sides. This issue is sometimes found with very good luster, especially in comparison to other Dahlonega quarter eagles from this era.COLORATION: Vivid orange-gold color can be seen on the obverse and the reverse. This color has almost certainly been added and the appearance could greatly improve if it were carefully removed.EYE APPEAL: While we are not enamored with the (current) color of this coin, it has the potential to possess excellent eye appeal if carefully conserved. It does show exceptional detail and appears to have clean surfaces and good luster. It is still among the finest known 1852-D quarter eagles and is a very important coin for the specialist.COMPARABLES: We sold a PCGS MS62 in our January 2003 auction as lot 4696 and this coin realized $20,700. Another PCGS MS62 sold as lot 454 in the Bowers and Merena October 1999 Bass II Sale where it realized $25,300. In the 1999 FUN Sale, we sold yet another PCGS MS62 as lot 7651 where it realized $28,750.PEDIGREE: Purchased from Doug Winter and Lee Minshull in July 1999; earlier in a North Carolina collection and purchased directly from the Stack's January 1993 auction where it was lot 1650. This is the plate coin in the second edition of the Winter book and it is listed in the current Condition Census as being tied for second finest known.
