1852-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 15-M. The 1 in the date is close to the bust, while the 2 is equidistant between the bust and the denticles. The 5 is noticeably slanted, and the 2 is much wider than the other three digits. Winter notes that "Starting with this issue, the mintage figures for Dahlonega quarter eagles become substantially lower than for those struck from 1839 through 1851. The 1852-D is among the hardest Dahlonega quarter eagles to locate and is exceeded in rarity among the issues from the 1850s only by the famous 1854-1856 issues." Unlike most examples of this issue, the surfaces are only lightly abraded, and there are no planchet problems. Radiant luster emanates from the surfaces, which show considerable prooflikeness. Only light ticks and field hairlines appear under a loupe, and the strike is bold, save for some softness on the eagle's legs and right (facing) claw. The small die line through star 3 is diagnostic. Population: 2 in 61, 6 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
