<B>1852 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge. Number 252.</B></I> A nearly flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 50mm x 49mm. Manufactured by a local silversmith and jeweler named William Meredith Rouse. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "252" in individual punches; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and "1852" bar punched. The condition is very good with a dark patina. <BR><BR>The Mechanic occupation is considerably rarer than either the Servant or Porter badges, and the masters had to pay a higher fee which at this time would have been $7.00 per year.
