1852-C G$1 MS63 PCGS. Winter 7-H. Many extant '52-C Gold Dollars display noticeable striking incompleteness in the center of the reverse that was caused by a foreign object that adhered to the die during striking. This coin does not display this feature, but there are some shallow planchet flaws (as produced) over and around the central devices on both sides. As a result, there was not enough metal to fully strike up all of the design elements, particularly in Liberty's portrait. Both sides exhibit warm orange-gold color with more deeply set, green-gold undertones in evidence as the coin turns away from a light source. While the surfaces could be a little more vibrant, they are remarkably free of post-production distractions. We last offered a similarly graded, PCGS-certified 1852-C Gold Dollar as lot 7728 in our January 1999 FUN Signature Sale. That coin, part of the spectacular North Georgia Collection, traded hands for $11,500.From the Ashland City Collection.
