1852-C G$1 MS63 NGC. Winter 7-H. Although this coin is the same variety as the PCGS-certified example that is also part of this collection, it was struck on a much more carefully prepared planchet. The absence of the often-seen Mint-made defect in the center of the reverse also explains why this coin exhibits uncommonly sharp striking detail throughout. The yellow-gold surfaces are silent on the subject of singularly distracting abrasions, although a small strike through (as produced) on the reverse at the lower left corner of the 8 in the date is mentioned for accuracy as well as pedigree concerns. The 1852-C was produced in limited numbers (9,434 pieces), but it is still among the more plentiful C-mint Gold Dollars from the Charlotte Mint. It ranks eighth out of the nine issues from this Southern branch mint in terms of both overall and high grade rarity. We caution bidders, however, that this date is anything but common in an absolute sense, particularly in grades above the BU level. Based on Doug Winter's listing for this issue, coins that grade MS63 are just shy of Condition Census standing. An obviously important offering from an impressive collection. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
