1852-C<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. Variety 14-I. A prooflike piece with noticeable reflectivity near design elements. The strike is precise on the portrait, and the high relief hair above the ear shows no indication of wear. Striking bluntness is relegated to the eagle's left (facing) leg. A partial wire rim on the obverse spans from 2 to 7 o'clock. Clash marks are present beneath the beak, and on both sides of the right wing and lowest arrow head. Consequential marks are absent, however, and combined with the quality of strike, ensure the eye appeal of this challenging Charlotte Mint quarter eagle. Only 9,772 pieces were produced, and although XF to AU examples appear on occasion, Uncirculated survivors are both rare and desirable. Census: 5 in 61, 2 finer (8/06).
From The Della Collection.
