1852-C $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Winter 14-I, the only known dies. The 1852-C started as a low mintage issue with fewer than 10,000 coins produced (9,772 pieces, to be exact), What's more, this issue undoubtedly saw widespread circulation because the Charlotte Mint refrained from producing Quarter Eagles in 1853. Winter estimates that only 75-85 coins are extant in all grades, a mere 2-3 pieces of which are Mint State. With bright, yellow-gold color and modest brightness in the fields, this BU quality survivor easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. The obverse is rather well struck for a product of the Charlotte Mint with only light striking softness on the hair curls and sharp star centrils. The reverse is typically softer, but the all-important mintmark is sharp. An indentation in the reverse field above the eagle's right (facing) wing is the most obvious pedigree marker. We last offered a Mint State representative of this, the fifth rarest C-mint Quarter Eagle in high grades, as lot 453 in our 1994 Detroit ANA Bullet Auction. That coin was certified MS62 by PCGS. Combined NGC and PCGS population for this issue in Mint State is a mere eight coins (11/02), some of which likely represent resubmissions.
