1852<50C> MS64 PCGS. The 1852 is an unusual date to encounter in mint condition, even though more than 77,000 pieces were struck. The next year, 1853, the weight of half dollars was reduced by 7%. As a result, Gresham's Law went into effect with the new "bad" money driving out the old "good" money. The vast majority of old tenor silver was melted, leaving very few examples of this date, and even fewer high grade Uncirculated coins. PCGS has only certified one other MS64 with four finer, while NGC has graded five in MS64 with six finer (5/05). This is a fully struck coin that has lovely, softly frosted mint luster. Each side is lightly toned and there are no obvious or distracting blemishes to report.
