1852<50C> MS62 NGC. This crisply struck low mintage Seated Half has good luster and original golden-gray color. A few faint slide marks in the fields, but refreshingly clean overall. The Wiley-Bugert reference states "one interesting marriage can be found with a bounced die doubled date; has very heavy diagonal die lines in the recessed area of the shield." No machine doubling is present, but this lot is the variety with the heavy die lines within the reverse shield. Just 77,130 pieces were struck, likely because silver coins were contemporaneously hoarded from circulation since their bullion value was greater than face. High mintages followed in 1853 once the silver weight was decreased.
