1852 50C MS61 NGC. The 1852 was struck during a period when the New Orleans Mint regularly issued many more coins than its Northern counterpart in Philadelphia. In this case, 77,000 example of the 1852 were minted, while nearly twice as many of the 1852-O were struck. But more significant than the mintage is the silver market at the time. In the following year, 1853, the weight of a half dollar was reduced by 7%, from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams. Gresham's Law went into effect, as the new "bad" money drove out the old "good" money. Most of the old-tenor silver was melted, leaving few examples of this date, and even fewer high grade Uncirculated coins. NGC and PCGS combined have graded only 72 Mint State examples (1/06). This coin is seemingly conservatively graded, perhaps because of subdued luster from deep, original toning in shades of gray, copper-gold, and amber. There are few mentionable distractions otherwise.
From The Diamond Collection, Part Two.
