1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous.
1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous.--Scratched--NCS. XF Details. K-14, High R.5. The final fifty dollar slug variety produced by the U.S. Assay Office of Gold. After the facility was allowed to issue lower denominations in 1853, only ten dollar and twenty dollar pieces were struck. Once the San Francisco Mint was opened in 1854, the fifty dollar pieces gradually became scarce, then rare, as they were melted and reconstituted as Federal double eagles. Luster emerges from the legends, wings, and engine turning of the present example. The obverse is slightly glossy, and the obverse field has several thin abrasions. The reverse has fewer marks, although a corner is nicked at 10 o'clock. Listed on page 355 of the 2008 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
