1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU58 NGC. K-14, High R.5. Although dated 1852, Fifties of this variety (of which 23,800 pieces were produced) were struck in early 1853 by the United States Assay Office of Gold under Curtis, Perry, and Ward. The otherwise bright, medium gold surfaces deepen to green-gold shades as the coin turns away from the light. All angles allow appreciation of features that are not excessively abraded for either the type or the grade, although we do note some moderate handling marks here and there. The strike is a little blunt over the central obverse highpoints and around the periphery on that side, but all design elements are evident. There are no distracting rim bruises. Listed on page 291 of the current Guide Book. Population: 5 in 58, 4 finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
