1852[$20] MS63 PCGS.
1852<$20> MS63 PCGS. The 1852 is one of the more commonly encountered Type One twenties, at least in the XF-AU grade range. A few higher grade pieces were in the Baltimore Hoard, but any coin that is MS62 or finer can be considered to be in the Condition Census. Of the three types of luster seen on 1852 twenties, this coin has the type that is seen less often, i.e., with semi-reflective to prooflike fields. Sharply defined in all areas, this is a spectacular Type One double eagle and one that shows very few marks that indicate coin-to-coin contact. However, on the reverse on the right side of the glory of rays there are several small alloy spots, as often seen.
As noted in the Floyd Starr catalog, the 1852 double eagle master dies (15 obverses, 29 reverses) were sunk from the same master hubs used for the dies of 1851. The die that struck this particular coin shows a break through the bases of the date numerals, with another break from the rim at 5:30 and running through stars 13 to 11. The Y in LIBERTY is also repunched. On the reverse, clash marks are seen, showing most clearly above the eagle's left (facing) wing. The crossbar of the first A (in STATES) was hand repaired.
Ex: Thomas Elder's Sale (6/1/37), this information is handwritten on an old, tattered brown envelope that is included, and we assume it is written in Starr's hand; Floyd Starr Sale (Stack's, 10/92), lot 1282.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
