1852<$20> AU58 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint coined nearly as many double eagles in 1852 as it did in 1851. This is another common date, and yet it is usually only encountered in XF and lower level AU grades. Examples that are fully Mint State as well as those that just miss the Mint State grade level, such as this example, are highly elusive. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen listed the usual varieties with Thin or Heavy Numerals, as well as an obvious doubled date variety. This doubled date variety has one of the most dramatic repunched dates of its time (not offered in the present collection).
This example from The Wyoming Collection has exceptional aesthetic appeal with nearly full prooflike surfaces and rich honey-gold coloration. Small areas of mint frost are hidden in the devices, and evident in the field along the lower part of Liberty's profile. The surfaces are mildly abraded, but there are no deep or distracting marks on either side. Struck from a rotated reverse die, turned about 30 degrees counterclockwise.
From The Wyoming Collection.
