1852<$10> Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, Small Head VF35 PCGS. Kagin-3, R.6. In a special S.S. Central America PCGS gold-label holder. The "plugged" die obverse. The coin apparently took an 1851 die, drilled out the final digit, and inserted a 2. A telltale circle around the 2 remains. Three die pairings are known for 1852 Wass Molitor tens, of which the most often seen is the wide date, Large Head variety. The close date, Small Head is much tougher. A search through our auction records shows that we have offered this variety only six times before. This softly struck, typically abraded piece reposed for many years on the ocean floor, waiting for rescue from the wreck of the S.S. Central America. The color is a consistent yellow-gold, and there are no major scrapes or singularly mentionable abrasions. A rare opportunity to acquire an example of Kagin-3, pedigreed to a famous maritime disaster. Listed on Page 357 of the 2006 Guide Book. Population: 6 in 35, 6 finer (12/05).
