1852<$10> Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, Large Head AU58 NGC. Kagin-4, R.5. Pointed Bust, Short Neck, Wide Date. Bright greenish-gold surfaces with nearly complete luster and only a trace of wear. The surfaces are lightly marred as always for these soft gold coins. The last time that we offered an example equal or finer than this was four years ago in our January 2002 FUN Sale. This variety is clearly the most plentiful of all the issues of Wass Molitor, and yet perhaps only 50 pieces survive today. Like all examples of this variety, the obverse has a concave appearance while the reverse appears to be poorly detailed. In fact, if not for the nearly complete luster on the reverse, it could be argued that that side of the coin only grades Very Fine. This is strictly a result of poor engraving, the obverse die cut much too deep, and the reverse too shallow.
