1852 $10 US Assay NGC AU58 [L#1460
This $10 specimen displays light reddish gold surfaces, with expected abrasions and hairlines (though far fewer than usually encountered). Wear from circulation is contained to the tips of the wings, eagle's neck and eagle's breast. The only sharper hit is a pair of old nicks below the ribbon with the fineness inscribed on it. These issues were produced for the specific reason to circulate, which was definitely the result of most that were struck. The U.S. Assay Office had the role of normalizing barter and commerce in the gold rush states by providing assay services and coinage that were more consistent, reliable and more heavily favored by the public. This is a well-executed AU example from a firm that was the underpinning for the soon-to-be-operational San Francisco Mint that opened in 1854.
