1852 $10 Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar VF20 PCGS. K-8, R.6. Beginning January 12, 1852, 8,650 Ten Dollar Gold Pieces were issued after Moffat & Co. was petitioned by the merchants and bankers of San Francisco. The attractive reverse design that displays "264 GRS" (grains) complies with comments by the United States Mint assayers, Eckfeldt and Dubois, that California gold had to weigh 264 grains to render Ten Dollars worth of gold when refined. Both K-8 (Close Date) and K-9 (Wide Date) of the 1852 Moffat & Company Ten Dollar have the same rarity in Kagin's book Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States, and they are priced identically in the 2002 Guide Book. A moderately worn representative of the former die marriage, this coin was obviously struck from native silver-alloyed California gold as it displays light greenish-gold color that lightens to yellow-gold shades as the surfaces turn into the light. The more protected areas toward the upper obverse and lower reverse borders exhibit some deeper color, and scattered light to moderate abrasions are well within the context of the VF grade level. The major design elements retain sufficiently bold definition with the obverse a high VF and the reverse a solid XF. This is a coin that should be inspected, as its overall appearance is quite acceptable for the grade. Listed on page 290 of the current Guide Book. From The Estate of Jack L. Klausen.
