1852<$10> Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar Repaired, AU Details, NCS. K-9, R.6. This is the Wide Date variety, although incorrectly identified by NCS as a Close Date example. The wide spacing between the 5 and the 2 is the easiest diagnostic. The Moffat & Co. firm was among the earliest of private coiners in California, and they were also one of the most prolific of issuers. Local businessmen in San Francisco approached Moffat & Co. with a need for small coinage. In response, the company issued 8,650 of these coins in the early part of the year. The reverse is inscribed 264 grains and 880 fine, for a net of 232.3 grains pure gold, or about 1/10th of a grains more than a Federal ten-dollar piece. This is a pleasing example with light yellow coloration and considerable retained luster. The repair mentioned by NCS is located on the right obverse rim and at Liberty's neck.
From The Great Western Collection of Territorial Gold.
