Well worn but uninjured by its sojourn thousands of feet down in Davey Jones's locker where it rested undisturbed for better than 130 years before salvage operations brought it to the surface. Because the rims are not knocked about, we can easiliy recommend it to even the more choosy buyers. The United States Assayer, Augustus Humbert, had a contract with the state of California and the federal government to strike this pieces at a time before there was a federal mint in the western region of the country. Most of Humbert's coinage later provided the substance for the early San Francisco mint gold coins. (SSCA 7191)
