Both fields have been extensively smoothed, and the left-side obverse denticles are crudely re-engraved to repair a couple of rim dings. After the first year's production of fifty dollar "slugs," the Assay Office began to produce gold coins that were more convenient to use in the channels of commerce, issuing both ten dollar and twenty dollar denominations. Sometime between March 5 and April 2, 1852, a total of 7,500 twenty dollar gold pieces were struck by the Assay Office under the auspices of Augustus Humbert.
