1852/1<$10> Humbert Ten Dollar MS61 NGC. K-8, R.5. A stunning example of this classic Territorial eagle. The surfaces retain the desired luster and the strike is sharp throughout. All known specimens show the die crack on the reverse. Struck over a brief four day period in early 1852. At the time these were coined, there was a desperate need for smaller change in early California. Most of the gold pouring out of the mines, mountains and streams was converted into the large $50 slugs. These were fine for transport, but didn't help with smaller purchases. No doubt these smaller Eagles and Double Eagles were a welcome addition to the miners pouches, and could be used for a good meal, night on the town and whatnot, without creating a problem for the merchant that had to make small change. As nice as this date is ever found, NGC has graded four specimens this high with none seen finer.
