1852/1<$10> Humbert Ten Dollar--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF40. K-8, High R.5. The dies for this variety were produced in 1851, but no coins were struck at that time since the expected authority to produce smaller denominations did not occur until the subsequent year. According to Don Kagin, this variety was struck for only four days, between February 11 and 14 of 1852. The diagnostic die crack bisects the reverse, of greater interest is a relatively large die break along the crack beneath the FO in CALIFORNIA, an interesting late die state. The eagle's wings are richly detailed on this greenish-gold and faintly granular piece. The engine-turned reverse design has a couple of scrapes, and the reverse rim is damaged in places.
