1852/1<$10> Humbert Ten Dollar AU50 PCGS. K-8, High R.5. Although the branch mint at San Francisco was not established until 1854, the U.S. Assay Office began coinage operations in 1851 using Moffat & Co. facilities. Coinage in 1851 was limited to $50 pieces, despite the need in commerce for smaller gold denominations. Late in 1851, permission was finally obtained to produce $10 and $20 gold pieces, and 1851-dated dies were made. Permission was promptly rescinded before the dies went into production, and again granted in February 1852. The 1851 $10 and $20 were overdated to comply with the date of legal production. The 1 underdigit is present as a thick upright within the 2 in the date. The bold, nearly vertical crack on the reverse (legend side) from 12 to 5 o'clock is present, and is diagnostic of the Kagin-8 variety. This mustard-gold example has rich definition on the eagle, although the fletchings and shield exhibit wear. Distributed minor marks are not consequential.
