A splendid Humbert $50 octagonal slug with reeded edge and target reverse. 887 THOUS fineness from native gold, Lustrous medium yellow gold with a hint of coppery orange toning around from the copper alloy in the metal. Well struck including legends and outer corners. Luster remains strong on both sides, of this handsome piece, especially around the design elements and inside the dentils on the obverse, though some breaks are caused by a scattering of bagmarks in the fields. No especially heavy marks are revealed, unusual for this type, and few modest rim nicks barely require mention. The overall eye appeal is excellent on this historic gold piece.
