1851<S$1> Restrike PR64 PCGS. The 1851 Restrike silver dollars are differentiated from the Originals by placement of the date. The Originals, struck in 1851, have the date high in the field with the tops of each numeral almost touching the base of Liberty. The Restrikes, minted in the very late 1850s at the earliest, and possibly into the 1870s, have the date almost exactly centered between the base of Liberty and the border. 1851 Original silver dollars exist in both proof and business strike format, while the Restrikes are only known in proof format. The total mintage for the Restrikes is not specifically known, however, it was certainly not a large quantity for these are almost as rare as the Originals. This Choice proof is extremely well detailed, and has pale champagne toning on each side. A few hairlines and other tiny scratches keep this from Gem quality. An exciting opportunity for the Seated dollar specialist. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (10/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
