1851$1> Restrike PR63 PCGS. In his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the U.S., David Bowers writes that this restrike issue is believed to have been made at the Philadelphia Mint around 1858-1860 and probably again 1867-1868 for sale to collectors. Between 50 and 100 specimens are estimated to have been minted. Made only with a Proof finish, the restrike is further differentiated from its original business strike counterpart by its date being nearly centered between the base of Liberty and the border.
The bright surfaces of this example display a narrow band of cobalt-blue patina around the rims that transitions to whispers of lavender and golden-tan, all of which frames nearly brilliant centers. The design elements are exquisitely struck, and exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout. Some inoffensive wispy hairlines define the grade. Population: 4 in 63, 3 finer (1/06).
