1851<S$1> Restrike PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS. Centered date. A stunning example of this rare and sought-after date. Silver Dollar production slowed to a dribble in 1851, and as collector demand increased a few years later, then chief coiner George Eckfeldt figured he could satisfy demand by running off a few extra coins, late at night in the Mint, after everyone else went home. Collectors were now able to obtain, for a small premium, certain rare dates of various denominations. Hence this restrike 1851 Silver Dollar. Today, there have been a meager 27 pieces graded by PCGS, with this coin being the only graded at that service with Deep cameo surfaces. Quite possibly, there have been multiple submissions which are still included inThe PCGS Population Report, which may reduce the number known. In any event, thanks to George Eckfeldt, collectors today have a much better chance of completing their date sets.
This particular coin has just a hint of milky toning on both sides, is well struck, with richly frosted devices and watery mirror fields. A few stray hairlines can be found, otherwise this coin is free of distracting marks. Identifiable by a small group of marks under the E of AMERICA. A foremost rarity that is seldom seen and always coveted by knowledgeable collectors.
