1851-O<$20> AU55 PCGS. Attractive greenish-gold color with lustrous fields and sharp design details. This is a desirable high-quality example that is rarely bested. Light abrasions are typical for these large gold coins. New Orleans Mint double eagles are the scarcest of the series, in general terms. They were only struck from 1850 to 1861, and again in 1879. Only three of those 13 years saw mintages exceeding 100,000 coins, and not surprisingly, those were the first three years of the denomination. Once the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, it was no longer necessary to send freshly mined gold to New Orleans or Philadelphia to be turned into coinage. The mintage of 315,000 New Orleans Mint double eagles in 1851 represented about 40% of the southern Mint's entire production of this denomination. Population: 25 in 55, 27 finer (4/06).
