1851 N-44 R7+ VG7.
1851 N-44 R7+ VG7. Several points sharper with nicks scattered about both sides, strongest on the rim at stars 3 & 4. Glossy mottled mix of browns ranging from golden tan to chocolate, possibly recolored. The attribution points are visible and the puffy fields (which inspired the "pillowed dies" label attached by Jack Wadlington after seeing one of them) are obvious in spite of the relatively low grade. The variety was discovered by Don Weathers and verified in October of 1991. To date only 5 examples are known, and none has been discovered since January of 1997 in spite of extensive publicity. Obviously this die marriage was quite brief, which is understandable considering that both dies were so badly swollen right from the start. (Note: This reverse die was also used to strike the unique 1851 N-42.) Third finest in a census of 40(2)-7-5-2. DWH #1926.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
