1851 N-42 R8+ (Unique) NO COIN.
1851 N-42 R8+ (Unique) Not For Sale. This is the only die variety of the late date cent series (1840-1857) not represented in the Dan Holmes collection. The unique example, which grades VF35 to EF40, is in the collection of Thomas R. Wagemaker of Minnesota, who discovered the new variety in 1986. At the request of Bob Grellman (who certified the new variety), that coin was included as lot #1624 in the Jack Robinson sale conducted by Superior on 1/29/89, and it was plated in that catalog. It was graciously added to that sale in an effort to expose the new variety to the collecting public, but the owner had no intent to sell and repurchased it at the auction. The N-42 variety comes from a marriage of two easily identifiable dies that were used to strike other varieties. In spite of decades of exposure in Grellman's attribution guides and the "Cherrypicker's Guide," no new examples have surfaced. The obverse is from N-1 in its earliest die state and the reverse is from N-44, probably earlier. The photos used here are NOT of the unique N-42. Instead, these photos are of the N-1 obverse and N-44 reverse of those varieties in this sale.

Provenance: Currently in the collection of Tom Wagemaker.
