<Our item number 99294>1851 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Original high date. Very Rare. 1,300 coins minted. The 1851 is a rarity within the Seated Liberty series, one of the most sought-after key issues. It is more elusive than the other low mintage date, 1852, whose total of 1,100 pieces is slightly less than the 1851. The latter production does not count Restrike Proofs, which are distinguished by the lower position of the date. Although Original 1851 Dollars have been cataloged as Proofs in the past, these are now believed to have been prooflike business strikes. Given the extremely small production, it is understandable that there be prooflike pieces among the few Mint State survivors. Bowers (1993 encyclopedia) surmises these prooflikes might also have been the outcome of die polishing to remove clash marks.

Only about 30 or so coins have been certified in Mint State by PCGS and NGC combined, some of which are resubmissions.

The present MS62 piece displays brig ht surfaces that are overlaid by stippled cobalt-blue and light gray patina. The design relief is exquisitely struck, with full detail on the Liberty and eagle motifs as well as on the peripheral elements such as the date, the stars, and the letters in the legends. A few minute ticks are scattered here and there, but none are of a size we feel deserve mention. A couple of roller marks at the top of Liberty's head may serve to identify the piece.
