1851 Liberty Seated Dollar PCGS MS62
A couple of small marks are seen on the back of Liberty's head. The 1851 is a much talked-about rarity within the Seated Liberty series. Its fame surpasses the 1852, whose mintage of 1,100 pieces is slightly fewer than the 1851, for which 1,300 coins were struck. The latter production does not count Restrike proofs, which are readily distinguished by the placement of the date lower in the field. Original 1851 Dollars have sometimes been listed as proofs in the past, but these are now believed to have been prooflike business strikes. Given the low production, is it not surprising that there are prooflike "first strike" pieces from new dies among the handful of Mint State survivors? Bowers (1993) surmises these prooflikes may also be from die polishing to remove clash marks. The present piece exhibits slight contrast with the frosty devices. Medium toned, hints of natural color adorn the rims and cover the fields. This sharply struck example deserves placement in the finest specialized set of Seated Dollars. It resides in a PCGS grading holder so its assigned grade is established. (#6939)
