1851 Humbert $50 slug, 887 THOUS. Reeded edge RAW EF
The popular (and extremely heavy, since it weighs two-and one half ounces) fifty dollar gold ingot struck by Augustus Humbert, United States Assayer. This generally choice specimen has most of but not all of the legend readable outside the central raised circle, with four date digits clearly seen. Parts of AUGUSTUS HUMBERT UNITED STATES ASSAYER OF GOLD SAN FRANCISCO are obliterated by wear or, in one spot, minor smoothing (above UNITED). The corners are decent and not smashed as on many. Normal circulation abrasions are accounted for in the grade. The fineness of these varied, but the mint settled on 887 THOUS for those struck from "native" alloys, and this is the type most often seen. On the back of the ingot or "slug" as collectors call these, is a design made by machinery. This engine-turned relief was the handiwork of the aforementioned Augustus Humbert himself, according to the records! The eagle with shield was designed and engraved by Curtis Wright who had the right stuff to create a lasting, timeless design to fascinate generations of coin collectors!
