1851<G$1> MS65 NGC. A highly lustrous and attractively preserved Gem. The portrait of Liberty is well struck, as is the wreath and all legends aside from the A in DOLLAR. The stars are also sharp aside from the pair that bookends the bust tip. A mint-made area of grainy prooflike surface is noted near 12 o'clock on the obverse, and a few faint wisps of lilac color reach the 51 in the date. Gold Dollars had their circulation heyday in the early 1850s, since silver coins were hoarded due to a bimetallic ratio disturbed by an influx of California-mined gold.
From The Maegen and Bo Collection.
