1851-D $5 Weak D AU55 NGC. Winter 26-O, Second Ed
1851-D<$5> Weak D AU55 NGC. Winter 26-O, Second Edition. While the mintage was 62,710 pieces, the '51-D is an uncommonly difficult coin in high grades, with the majority of known specimens in the Fine to Very Fine grade range. Typical for the issue, this piece is softly struck in the centers. The first 1 in the date is imbedded in a denticle and shows noticeable repunching, while the lower edge and upper curve of the (typically weak) mintmark are barely visible, using magnification. (This is not due to a weak strike, but is a consequence of excess die polishing at the Dahlonega Mint.) The surfaces show a dull green-gold patina with strongly contrasting bright-orange accents near the peripheries. Lightly marked. Population: 8 in 55, 23 finer (6/05).
