1851-D<$5> AU58 NGC. Variety 26-R. The first 1 in the date is embedded in the denticles and repunched at the base, and the reverse displays a strong mintmark that is away from both the stem and feather. Most examples certified by NGC and PCGS are in the XF to mid-AU range. The AU58 specimen in this lot retains ample luster on bright yellow-gold surfaces that are devoid of significant abrasions. The strike is generally weak, as is characteristic of the '51-D. Liberty's hair at the temple is ill-defined, as are the feathers on the eagle's legs and neck. Most of the star centers, however, are fairly strong. Wispy slide marks occur over both sides, but do not significantly detract from the coin's overall eye appeal. Census: 15 in 58, 12 finer (5/06).
