1851-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Winter 14-L, the only known dies. While the 1851-D (11,264 pieces produced) is not the rarest Dahlonega Mint Quarter Eagle, it is, in Winter's opinion, one of the more undervalued Liberty Two-and-a-Halves produced in this Southern branch mint. Only 11-13 examples of the 85-95 coins believed extant (per Winter, 1997) grade AU, and survivors in all grades are usually found extensively abraded. With the exception of a few pinscratches over and before Liberty's face, the present example is free of singularly distracting blemishes. Rich green-gold color backlights orange-gold overtones, and the surfaces retain evidence of a satin textured finish. The otherwise bold definition wanes over the lower reverse eagle. The 1851-D is more challenging to locate than the 1849-D and 1850-D. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
