1851-C G$1 MS61 NGC. Winter 4-D. A late die state, there is a reverse break (as struck) atop OF AM in the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This issue's original mintage of 41,267 pieces is greater than that of all other Type One Gold Dollars from the Charlotte Mint combined. Not surprisingly, the 1851-C is the most plentiful Gold Dollar from this popular Southern branch mint. When viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics, however, the mintage of the 1851-C seems low. What's more, Winter's estimate of 65-75 pieces extant in Mint State is the sign of a conditionally scarce, if not rare issue. This is one of the better produced C-mint gold coins that we can remember handling. The obverse is typically sharper than the reverse, but even the latter side is bold throughout. Both sides are uncommonly abrasion-free for the assigned grade, although a moderate scrape in the reverse field below the D in DOLLAR is noted. Some shallow flaws in the planchet (as struck) are seen around the obverse portrait and in the center of the reverse, and there are also clashmarks (as produced) around the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date 1851. We last offered a similarly graded '51-C Gold Dollar as lot 7855 in our January 1999 FUN Signature Sale. That coin realized $2,530.From the Ashland City Collection.
