1851-C<$5> AU55 PCGS. Variety 16-G. Easily distinguished by a small mint-made punchmark on Liberty's earlobe. Unlike the similarly dated gold dollar, the 1851-C half eagle is one of the rarer coins of this denomination produced at the North Carolina branch mint. This issue (49,176 pieces produced) is equally as elusive as the 1854-C (39,283 pieces produced) in high grades, but the edge goes to the latter issue in terms of overall rarity. Winter estimates that between 23 and 25 1851-C half eagles are extant in About Uncirculated and Mint State grades. With subtle, green-gold color, the present example exhibits a refreshingly original appearance. Like most surviving representatives, the surfaces are peppered with small and moderate abrasions. The strike is, however, remarkably bold for this otherwise poorly produced issue.
