1851-C $5 AU50 PCGS
1851-C $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 16-G. The 1851-C tends to come weakly struck but one would not know it from looking at this piece. It is remarkably sharp for the date and ranks as one of the better struck 1851-C half eagles seen. The surfaces are very clean with some minor ticks in the fields; on the reverse there is one thin, old scratch through the eagle's neck up to the left wing below the F in OF. The luster is nearly full with a semi-prooflike finish. One of the best features of this lovely coin is its excellent color with deep yellow-gold hues on both sides. This piece is totally original and it has never been dipped or processed. It is among the most attractive--and the crustiest--1851-C half eagles known, and it is a rare date with this degree of eye appeal. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1851-C is considerably rarer than any of the other Charlotte half eagles from the 1849-1853 era. It is especially difficult to locate in properly graded AU55 and better. There are only a half dozen or so known in Uncirculated with the finest being the PCGS MS64 that is Ex: Elrod collection.
Ex: Chalkley Collection (Superior, 1/90), lot 4635.
