1851-C<$2 1/2> AU58 NGC. Variety 13-G. Winter's Charlotte gold reference (first edition) comments about this date, "An injury to the obverse die occurred toward the end of the production run and late strikes ... clearly show this. Still others show a number of heavy diagonal lines at the center of the obverse, as well as clashmarks at the central reverse ... . Any piece grading Extremely Fine is legitimately rare; I am aware of only one fully Mint State coin." While more Mint State coins have been uncovered in the nearly 20 years since that was written, it remains true that XF and higher coins are quite rare. NGC has graded 16 pieces in AU58, with 12 finer, while PCGS has graded no AU58 coins, and six finer (5/06); all those figures undoubtedly include resubmissions and crossovers.
This specimen does show the canal-shaped grooves from die damage often seen--one before and one behind Liberty's head--that extend to the rims. However, none of the central obverse lines are present, and the die damage does not affect the technical grade. There is also some planchet roughness and a couple of small laminations on the obverse. Little actual wear is visible, however, and as such the piece appears accurately graded. Much luster remains, and the reverse is pleasingly free of distractions.
