1851 50C AU55 PCGS. Breen-4826, WB-103. This is the variety with the top of the second 1 in the date recut. Breen described this as having the top of an errant 1 between 51. On this particular specimen, the obverse also suffers from strike doubling, causing the entire date to be doubled as well as the stars. As if that was not enough, this is also a late die state with a curved die crack through the base of all four digits in the date. Nearly full luster is visible along with very sharp design elements. This is a brilliant silver representative of the low-mintage 1851 Philadelphia half dollar. Just over 200,000 examples of this issue were produced, and only a small fraction of those survive today. This example has only faint traces of wear on the highest points.
From The Diamond Collection, Part Two.
