1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. VF30 PCGS. K-6, R.4. This variety has the decorative peripheral ribbon on the reverse very close to the edge. While the West Coast was awash in gold as miners dredged it from the earth, much of that gold was in a raw or impure state, and while the U.S. Mint did not have a presence there immediately, other firms stepped into the void; one of them, that of Augustus Humbert, would later receive official sanction.
The Humbert fifty dollar octagonal "slugs" found immediate and significant use in the nascent California state economy, as the moderate wear on this mustard-gold example can attest. Well struck overall, though the date is weak, with light, scattered marks across each side. A fascinating and comparatively affordable example of this historic issue. Listed on page 353 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 22 in 30, 76 finer (1/08).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
