1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. XF45 PCGS. K-6, R.4. There was probably never a need greater for a mint in any section of the country than Gold Rush California. When the bill was introduced in Congress, though, it was opposed by the state of New York, who believed they should have a mint. This was in turn opposed by neighboring state Pennsylvania, where the main mint had been since 1793. The best California could get out of the political wrangling of the early 1850s was an Assay Office that only produced fifty-dollar "slugs." That, of course, was better than the uncertain value and variable fineness of gold dust, which was the alternative. Augustus Humbert was the assayer in the office and a man of impeccable reputation. This piece was used for several years in the channels of commerce of early California and shows the slight highpoint wear one would expect. A number of small abrasions are scattered over the obverse and the devices are outlined with reddish patina.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
