1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. XF40 Fields Tooled, Cleaned Uncertified. K-6, R.4. The first coins produced by the United States Assay Office with Augustus Humbert as assayer were octagonal Fifty Dollar slugs. The present survivor, a representative of the K-4 variety, displays warm orange-gold color over mostly evenly worn surfaces. The date, however, is a little soft. Both sides are moderately abraded, although several abrasions were smoothed out on the reverse above the center target design. Also, there is evidence of expert rim and surface tooling at 7 o'clock causing the smoothing out of AUGUSTUS and the first 1 in 1851. This is still a fairly detailed representative specimen of these large "ingots," despite the aforementioned flaws and light cleaning. Listed on page 289 of the current Guide Book. This lot is housed in a black plastic holder. From The Estate of Jack L. Klausen. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
