<B>1851<$50 RE> Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. AU58 NGC.</B></I> K-6, R.4. This variety has a reeded edge, and a large target design on the reverse, with 22 concentric circles in the central target. John L. Moffat formed a partnership with Joseph R. Curtis, Philo H. Perry, and Samuel H. Ward, and it was under this organization that the Assay Office continued to operate, with Augustus Humbert as the federally appointed Assayer. Legally, Humbert was the only coiner in California who could use the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on his pieces. Although not legal tender, these were official government issues and they were accepted by the government. Breen commented: "Anticipating Humbert's arrival, Collector of Customs T. Butler King was authorized by President Fillmore, December 2, 1850, to receive any or all issues of the new Assay Office in payment of tariffs: a de facto recognition that they passed as federal money, effective from the first day of issue."<BR> This piece is a bright green-gold example with deep honey-gold toning and hints of orange color. Similar to others in the present example, this piece has traces of wear on the highpoints of the design. It is an attractive example with considerable luster, hints of reflectivity, and only the slightest abrasions.
