1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. AU53 NGC. Target Reverse. K-6, R.4. At the time this impressive coin was struck, the United States Assay Office of Gold was operating under the auspices of Moffat & Co. Augustus Humbert served as the assayer of the United States government at this facility, and each of the Fifty Dollar gold pieces produced by the Assay Office in 1851 carried his name either on the edge or around the obverse periphery. An important and elusive AU representative of the lettered edge 1851 Humbert slug, this pleasingly original coin displays reddish-copper highlights around the obverse devices. The balance of the surfaces are olive-gold in appearance, and both sides are not excessively abraded for a circulated frontier era gold coin of this size. We do, nonetheless, note a few reeding marks and moderate distractions, mostly toward the rims. There is plenty of appreciable definition remaining, particularly over the eagle's feathers.
