1851<$50 RE> Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous. XF40 PCGS. K-5, Low R.5. The bright surfaces and traces of mint luster indicate that this piece was carefully preserved over the decades, unlike most other "slugs" which were melted because of their high intrinsic value. Granted, there are numerous abrasions scattered about, but only a few marks are individually noticeable. The rims show a few knocks, as are often seen on these heavy coins. Moderately worn on the obverse, but showing only slight wear on the reverse. Light adjustment marks are also noted on the reverse. The fifty-dollar gold piece was accepted as legal tender on a par with standard U.S. gold coins. Listed on page 348 of the 2007 Guide Book.
From The Tide Collection.
